Audi's Auto Pilot A7

Imagine never having to look for a parking space ever again, but the car finds it for you. Audi has demonstrated a new self-parking technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2013. By using a specially designed smartphone app, a driver tells the car to park.  It will autonomously drive away on its own and find an empty parking space and then park itself. Later, the driver tells the car to pick him/her up via app, and the car will arrive in front of the driver by itself.  This system is operated by twelve ultrasound sensors and four video cameras. Also, the central computer provides available parking spaces and other parking structure layouts. Audi says that the system will be fully developed and commercially available in the next decade.

Still, many questions remain unanswered. What if the car cannot find the parking space and wanders around? That can be great for a driver who takes only few minutes to run errands and needs the car in front of him/her shortly, but it can be problematic for those who aren’t. What if the car gets towed away or stolen? This can be problematic, seriously. However, Audi’s technological approach is great, and I’m definitely looking forward to see it with further improvement.
